We Teach Humans to Speak Dog

Kat the Dog Lady was founded in 2023 on the belief that

not all dogs (or humans) learn the same. They each have their own unique traits and mannerisms, and therefore require their own unique and specialized training. That’s where we come in to introduce training that works!

Whether it’s for basic manners or more complex behavioral issues, our trainers are focused on not only training your dog, but teaching you how to effectively communicate with them, even after the trainer leaves. This method of training is full of fun techniques that will give you and your pup a happier life together. We will help you to teach your canine companion how to make better choices as well as teach you how to recover when your dog make a mistake.

Our training equation when your dog offers an unwanted behavior is simple: Give your dog a correction (that they understand), then give them direction (to do a wanted behavior), and then they can get to the reward (this can vary from food to toys to affection and even freedom)

In simpler terms:

Don't Do That + Do This Instead = Good Boy/Good Girl

How long have you been training?

I have around 10 years of experience in animal rescue, dog rehabilitation and behavior modification.
Beginning in 2014 I volunteered countless hours with V Animal Sanctuary during high school working with horses, cows, ducks, goats, and dogs on the farm each weekend.
I moved up to Reno, NV in 2015 and began volunteering with the Nevada Humane Society to help exercise, train, and rehome the dogs in the shelter.
In 2018 I shadowed Joanna Moritz at Fur and Feather Works to complete my program with Animal Behavior College to become a certified dog trainer.
In 2019 I worked hands-on with the SPCA in Reno, NV to help care for, rescue, and rehome stray dogs.
At the beginning of 2020 and into 2023 I found myself back in Las Vegas working at a local dog training facility and learned a lot of hands-on experience with a variety of breeds and challenges.
Now I’ve taken the next step to be able to help more people and their pups by starting my own training business as of

August 2023 and enjoy being able to help owners with their dogs.

What got you into dog training?
I remember being a little girl and watching things like Animal Planet and The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan as early as first grade. The clarity he brought to the dogs and their owners during the show mesmerized me even at a young age-and I was able to use it on my dogs with ease. I have always cherished the bond that canine and mankind can grow. Over the years I realized my natural talent for interpreting dogs and educating people could go hand in hand. I have found that I was put here on this earth to help people and my method of doing so is helping them learn to speak dog.

What kind of training do you offer?
My training focuses on building up the relationship between humans and their dogs. That is best done one on one with the owner’s hands on the dog right in front of me so that I can coach the owner’s relationship and handling skills. Something you will often hear me say is give your dog a correction and then give them direction. In simple terms- don’t do that, do this instead. Through correcting, redirecting, and rewarding the wanted behavior you will get a well trained dog. Balanced, real world training is what I offer. Training that works even when the trainer isn’t around. If I can get the dog to listen to me but you can’t then I really didn’t do my job right?

What tools do you use?
I use whatever tool I need to if it works for the dog. Primarily I work with slip leashes and the sidekick head halter leash but I am not above using prong collars and e-collars where necessary. Praise/affection, toys, and food are used for reinforcement. Training is about more than the tools you use in your hands. It’s about using the tool of your mind to lead and train your dog in the easiest way possible.

Do you work with aggressive dogs with bite histories?
Yes, with safety as my number one priority I feel I can safely handle aggressive dogs and help with their behavior modification. The majority of reactive or aggressive dogs are actually scared and feel the need to lash out to get people and dogs away from them. Why? Because they learned it works. It's my job to teach them to have an alternative response to these ‘scary’ things and teach their owner to lead them through life with confidence.

What is your favorite breed to work with?

With so many to choose from it seems impossible. And while this answer may be a cop out, I think my favorite breed to train is mutts. Mixed breed dogs are different with each and every one you handle. I like the challenge of working with a variety of temperaments and drives to keep me on my toes.

Grayson is the dog that started Kat's journey from a pure positive trainer to a balanced one. Grayson was NOT an easy puppy by any means and displayed some behavioral issues early on that Kat struggled with due to her limited knowledge at that time with studying positive reinforcement(R+) only. R+ works great for teaching your dogs new behaviors but not so much for stopping unwanted behaviors like chasing the cat, getting into the garbage, or screaming from excitement every time he saw a dog. Throughout their training journey together Grayson has grown into a balanced dog that is used for socializing other dogs during the training process. He helps Kat to teach dogs how to be good boys and girls just like him.
